Dental Cleanings are Important
A clean mouth is a healthy mouth! Dr. Sycamore is famous for his cleanings! He will personally, gently and thoroughly complete your dental cleaning. Don’t forget that plaque forms everyday so don’t neglect your professional cleaning every six months. If you are not up to date, here are 5 reasons why you should schedule a cleaning today!
1. Maintain Periodontal Health
If you are fortunate enough to have healthy gums, it’s critical to maintain that health! Periodontal disease is a destructive and irreversible process that obliterates the bone and gums surrounding the teeth. According to the NIH the primary cause of periodontal disease is caused by bacteria found in plaque. Plaque removal is precisely what we do in regular dental cleanings.
2. Remove Stains
Coffee, tea, soda, red wine, and sports drinks all stain and yellow teeth. The only way to improve the yellowing is to whiten your teeth. But exterior surface stains are often easy to be removed. Sometimes the stains are on the fronts of the teeth and they really mar the appearance of the teeth. Other times the stains are on the backs of the teeth. While you can’t directly see the stains they can actually decrease luminosity of the teeth and make them appear darker. Either way, stain removal is a great way to improve the appearance of your smile!
3. Remove Plaque and Tartar
Brushing and flossing is a great way to remove daily plaque but plaque that is not removed hardens and forms a “tartar” which can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. The “tartar”, or calculus, really sticks itself to the surface and between teeth. Brushing won’t remove it. But at your dental cleaning, Dr. Sycamore will use an ultrasonic scaler, which will use water and vibration to comfortably remove the calculus. Its critical to remove the calculus. If it remains on the teeth is causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums and leads to periodontal disease.
4. Polish Enamel
After the removal of the plaque and tartar Dr. Sycamore will spend a few minutes polishing all the surfaces of the teeth. He uses a pumice powder which smooths the external enamel surface of the teeth. While polished teeth feel phenomenal, the primary reason for a polish is to remove irregularities in the enamel. A smooth tooth surface make it more difficult for bacteria to stick to the teeth as well as making it easier to keep your teeth clean.
5. Freshen Breath
Bacteria stinks! Both figuratively and literally! It causes nearly all the problems that occur in our mouths. Including bad breath! A dental cleaning will remove all the bacteria harboring on and around the teeth. A clean mouth is a fresh mouth!
